Description
Southern Tanzanian safari, visiting the game reserves of Selous and Ruaha, and the Pangani coastal region. This 12-day safari itinerary offers an excellent alternative to the more popular Northern circuit, allowing you to see some of Tanzania’s less-visited game parks and reserves.

Itinerary
You will be met on arrival in Dar es Salaam and transferred to the nearby domestic airport for the flight to Ruaha. (NB. Depending on your international flight schedule, it may be necessary to include a night in Dar es Salaam or Arusha at the start of your itinerary.)
Your driver/guide from Mdonya Old River Camp will waiting at the Ruaha airstrip to greet you with a picnic lunch – ready to start your safari as soon as you land!
Ruaha is the second largest game park in Tanzania, and offers a game-viewing experience equal to its size. It has one of the largest populations of elephant of any park in Africa, while the densely forested environment also attracts various antelope, as well as plentiful giraffe and buffalo. The terrain is particularly good for sighting predators, including lion, occasionally leopard, and very occasionally African wild dog.
Enjoy a short game drive en route to Mdonya Old River Camp, a small bush camp set in the western region of Ruaha, and your home for the next three nights
After breakfast in camp, you will be transferred back to the airstrip, leaving early to allow time for a game drive en route. Your flight arrives into the Selous early afternoon. On arrival, you will be met by your driver and transferred to Impala Tented Camp in time for a late lunch and afternoon game activity.
The Selous contains some of the greatest concentrations of big game left on earth. It is the largest game reserve in Africa, and encompasses a hugely varied landscape of rolling savannah, woodland, grassland plains and numerous lakes. The Rufiji River system, which cuts through the heart of the reserve, is a magnet for wildlife big and small. Birding is equally good, with over 500 bird species identified within the reserve.
Safari activities at Impala Camp include game drives in open sided 4WDs, boat safaris along the Rufiji River and the lakes. For keen anglers, fishing on the river is also a possibility!
Wake early and transfer to the airstrip to catch the morning flight to Pangani, departing 07:30. As you’ll be setting off just after dawn, you’ll be given a packed breakfast. On arrival in Pangani, meet with your driver and transfer to the Tides Lodge.
The Tides Lodge is a remote, low-key beach resort situated some 10km south of Pangani on Ushongo Beach, on Tanzania's unspoilt northern coastline. Ushongo has been rated one of the Top Secret Beaches of the World by the Sunday Times travel magazine, and the Tides was the first and, to this day, the best lodge to open in the area.
The Tides offers just seven makuti-thatch chalets and two suites. The rooms are decorated in a fresh and simple manner, and cooled by the ocean breeze. The standard rooms are spacious, and feature twin/double bedrooms with Swahili-style carved wooden furnishings, large en-suite bathrooms, and private verandahs overlooking the beach and sea.
Activities available at the Tides include snorkelling & diving, kayaking, fishing, beach walks and cycling
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before transferring to the airstrip to board the flight to Dar es Salaam.
