6-Day Rongai Route Trek to Kilimanjaro Summit

Tour Overview

The 6-Day Rongai Route Trek is one of the most scenic and less crowded ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a great choice for trekkers who want a quieter climb and a gradual ascent to Uhuru Peak – the roof of Africa.

Highlights

Best Time to Visit

The best time to trek the Rongai Route is during the dry seasons – from January to March and June to October. These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and comfortable trekking conditions. While the route can be climbed year-round, the rainy months of April, May, and November may make trails slippery and reduce visibility.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a drive to Rongai Gate, located near the Kenyan border on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing park registration and meeting your experienced trekking team, you will start your ascent. The trail leads through cultivated farmland and lush pine forest, offering a tranquil start to the trek. Along the way, keep an eye out for colobus monkeys, colorful birds, and small antelope. The path is gentle and allows for a smooth introduction to the climb. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Simba Camp (2,600m), where tents will be set up for you. Enjoy a warm dinner and rest under the clear African sky.

After breakfast, begin trekking out of the forest and into the moorland zone. The landscape opens up with sweeping views of the plains stretching into Kenya. The path ascends gradually, making it easier to adjust to the increasing altitude. You’ll pass through heather-covered hills and see unique high-altitude plants before reaching the Kikelewa Caves Camp (3,600m). This campsite is known for its fascinating caves and the presence of giant groundsels, a rare species found only in East Africa’s alpine zones. Dinner and overnight at Kikelewa Camp.

Today’s trek is shorter but steeper as you climb up grassy slopes towards the jagged Mawenzi peaks. The trail may be demanding, but the changing scenery and fresh mountain air are rewarding. In just a few hours, you’ll reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,300m), a stunning campsite located in a dramatic cirque beneath Mawenzi Volcano. The crystal-clear tarn (small lake) reflects the peaks, creating postcard-perfect views. This is an excellent location for acclimatization, giving your body time to adjust to higher altitudes. Spend the afternoon exploring the area or simply relaxing before dinner.

Leaving Mawenzi Tarn, the trail crosses the wide, barren expanse known as the “Saddle”—a high-altitude desert plateau stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The scenery here feels otherworldly, with a stark, lunar-like landscape and distant views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. The trek is long but relatively gradual, allowing you to conserve energy for the summit attempt. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700m), the base camp for your summit climb. After an early dinner, your guides will brief you for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. Rest as much as possible before the big day.

The most challenging and rewarding day begins just before midnight. Equipped with headlamps, you’ll follow a slow, steady pace up steep switchbacks towards Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. From here, the trail continues along the rim, leading you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment—witness breathtaking views of glaciers, the African plains below, and the vast crater of Kilimanjaro.

After taking photos and celebrating your achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal. Then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m), where the lower altitude will feel refreshing. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

After breakfast, begin your final descent through lush rainforest, where the sounds of birds and the sight of exotic plants accompany your journey. The trail leads you to Marangu Gate (1,860m), where you’ll receive your summit certificate to mark your incredible accomplishment. Here, you will bid farewell to your trekking team before being transferred back to your hotel or onward to your next adventure.
